Global Temperature Rise and Extreme Weather Events

Global average temperatures have risen more than 1.5°C compared to the pre-industrial era. Notably, the year 2024 has gone down in history as the hottest year on record.

Fossil Fuels

Fossil fuels account for approximately 76% of global greenhouse gas emissions, releasing 36.3 billion tons of CO₂ each year.

Effects in Turkey

According to basin-based projections in Turkey, the average temperature is expected to rise between 2.5°C and 4°C by the year 2100.

Deforestation

The loss of approximately 10 million hectares of forest each year hinders carbon absorption, further intensifying climate change.

Main Factors Causing Climate Change

Sectors such as agriculture, livestock, and natural gas production emit around 570 million tons of methane, rapidly accelerating climate change. The industrial sector also produces large amounts of CO₂ emissions.

Climate

Climate Wall, Climate History, Season Simulator and more... Come closer to explore the depths of climate with the Climate Apparatus of the Mercan 100th Year Climate and Environment Science Center. From understanding the Earth's life balance and the effects of greenhouse gases to observing how seasons form, experience everything with these apparatus, an unmissable opportunity for those who want to gain in-depth knowledge about climate science!

Earth Layers
Earth's Crust Mantle Outer Core Inner Core Center

Earth's Crust (0-70 km)

The outermost layer of the Earth, divided into oceanic crust (basalt) and continental crust (granite). Its thickness varies between 5-70 km and supports life.

Upper Mantle (70-670 km)

Magma exists in a fluid state in the asthenosphere beneath the lithosphere, and tectonic plates move here. It is directly related to volcanic activities and earthquakes.

Lower Mantle (670-2,900 km)

Density and temperature increase (up to 3,700°C) and rocks become more solid. Heat from the core accumulates here, directing convection currents.

Outer Core (2,900-5,150 km)

Composed of liquid iron and nickel, it is the source of the magnetic field. Convection currents create the dynamo effect that generates Earth's magnetic field.

Inner Core (5,150-6,371 km)

Composed of iron-nickel alloy in solid state due to extreme pressure. Its temperature rises to 5,500°C, making it the hottest layer of the Earth.

General Culture Equipments

The General Culture Equipments at Mercan 100th Year Climate and Environment Science Center offer an opportunity to explore scientific concepts in a fun and interactive way. Visitors can experience a range of fascinating setups, from models revealing the Earth’s inner layers to discovering the hearing ranges of different creatures through sound frequencies, visualizing mathematical theorems, and interacting with the electrical conductivity of the human body. Each setup allows visitors to learn by touching, observing, and interacting. Highlighting the impact of science in daily life, this area provides valuable insights into various disciplines such as physics, mathematics, biology, and chemistry. Demonstrating that science is more than just textbook knowledge, the General Culture Equipments promise an educational and unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages!

Layers of the Earth

An interactive setup about the Earth's layers. It includes a lever on the table connected to a model of the Earth.

Communicating Vessels Theory

Communicating vessels are tubes of different shapes connected at the bottom. A central button fills the tubes with liquid. Buttons in front of the tubes are used to drain the liquid. Since atmospheric and liquid pressure are the same in all tubes, the liquid levels remain equal.

Race in Silence

The setup consists of an entrance, a gravel path, and an exit. Sound sensors under the gravel path detect the visitor's footsteps. The noise score is displayed on a screen on the setup.

Sound Room

The setup focuses on the hearing abilities of living creatures.

Heart Drum

Our heart pumps blood with a certain pressure at each beat. A measuring device on the table measures the pressure of the vein in our fingertip. When we get excited, our heartbeat accelerates, changing the drum's rhythm.

Pythagorean Theorem

According to the Pythagorean theorem, the sum of the squares of the lengths of the two perpendicular sides of a right triangle equals the square of the length of the third side, called the “hypotenuse.”

Finger Voltage Device

The setup addresses the conductivity of electricity through the human body.

Augmented Reality Sandpit

The visitor creates different surface shapes on the sandpit. A distance sensor above the setup detects the distance to the sand surface. Contour lines and a color map are projected onto the sand using a projection device.

Periodic Table

The periodic table elements are displayed on the wall of the setup. The elements can be examined on a touchscreen on the table.

Outdoor Exhibits

The outdoor exhibits at Mercan 100th Year Climate and Environmental Science Center offer visitors an interactive and enjoyable discovery journey in harmony with nature. From energy transformations to musical rhythms, from water journey to recycling, this area provides an opportunity to learn science through experience.

Caretta Caretta from Waste

Mersin coasts are one of the significant breeding centers for Caretta Carettas. These turtles, synonymous with Mersin, have been transformed into an iconic sculpture made from waste. The wire cage will contain waste items such as 0.5-liter PET bottles, blue plastic bags, detergent containers, green and blue beverage bottles, and toys.

Pedal and Light Up the World

Visitors pedal bicycles to convert kinetic energy into electrical energy, and after a while, the world turns from gray to green and lights up.

Xylophone

A musical instrument consisting of tuned wooden bars arranged in a scale, played by striking with two mallets. The setup serves both sides, with 16 units on the front and back, totaling 32, and two mallets on each side for making music.

Orchestra

Visitors will hear rhythms from different instruments through buttons. They can press multiple buttons simultaneously to create their own music.

Laser Harp

The visitor activates the circuit by touching the laser beam. Each laser has a receiver, and these receivers are linked to specific harp notes.

Energy House

A house made up of setups designed to apply science and energy concepts in a fun way. With sensor-activated steps, solar panels, mills, levers, and gears, children produce energy in various ways and experience changes in the house.

Sundial

An elliptical sundial setup used to measure time based on the sun’s position. The visitor stands on a rectangular marker on the setup and learns the time by following their shadow on the horizontal plane.

Kinetic Wind Power

A kinetic windmill setup powered by wind, with momentum centered on its axis.

Journey of Water

Visitors use a circular lifting device, Archimedes’ screw, channels, and barriers to transfer water to a mill on a horizontal plane.

Waste in the Harbor

A setup that gamifies waste management based on a Mersin Harbor model. The goal is to clear paper, metal, glass, and plastic waste from the harbor according to their categories. Waste collected from the harbor pool is placed into colored boxes on the left using a crane.

Dome Photo Area

Visitors stand under a hemispherical glass dome, posing for photos as water flows over them. The water then flows into the pool of the "Waste in the Harbor" setup. It includes four different colored waste bins, each with eight matching colored waste items.

Whisper Dishes

This setup consists of two opposing parabolic reflectors. These reflectors have the ability to reflect sound, just as mirrors reflect light.
